A PFI marriage of convenience
Article Abstract:
The UK government aims to promote capital investment in higher education through the private finance initiative (PFI), attracting funds from the private sector. Construction companies face low demand, so have an incentive to bid for such projects, and using private finance means less pressure on income taxes. Sheffield Hallam University is carrying out research in this area from which other UK higher education bodies could learn. A forum is being proposed, with 35 universities showing interest.

How can Cinderella join her big sister at the ball
Article Abstract:
The future of United Kingdom further education has been examined by Ron Dearing and Helena Kennedy. Dearing is likely to recommend further expansion of further education. Kennedy is concerned about the limitations of a competitive model in further education. Government policy should be geared to increasing funds for further education and some policies such as Welfare to Work could help the sector. There is a danger of a two-tier system with higher education having more status and funding.
