...think postgraduates need more support to take on teaching roles
Article Abstract:
An examination of the changing face of university level education in the UK in the light of the drive to widen participation and increase the number of young people going to university. It is pointed out that while the number of students going to university has risen, the number of permanent faculty has not and in order to manage the growing workload, postgraduate students are often being recruited to take undergraduate seminars. The value of the teaching that a postgraduate seminar leader can give is questioned, and it is argued that if postgraduates are to be effective, they need more support.

Teaching downgrade mooted
Article Abstract:
Academics should be allowed to spend less time on teaching and administration and more time on research if recruitment and retention in higher education is to be improved, according to a government-commissioned report produced by the National Institute of Economic and Social Research. The report also warns that plans to create research-only or teaching-only universities (or jobs) could serve to exacerbate retention and recruitment problems.

Teaching status scrutinised
Article Abstract:
The Higher Education Authority (HEA) intends to conduct a study during late-2005 of the impact that various schemes and initiatives designed to elevate the status of teaching in universities in the UK have had. While there is anecdotal evidence that the schemes have been working, the aim of the study is to ascertain whether or not the HEA has been getting value for money.
