Article Abstract:

The survey is broken into regional categories by type of fuel. The atomic industry has recovered slightly from previous forecasts and 77 reactors supply 12.4% of national power supply. Fossil plant contructionlags, and utilities may face a squeeze at end of the decade. As many hyro projects were cancelled as completed in 1983, with most construction in Northeast. Combustion turbine construction is up, despite their drawbacks, because of their flexibility.

Electrification returns to the railroads

Article Abstract:

Electric railways are returning because of lower costs and maintenance, less environmental worries, high cost of diesel fuel, and better reliability. Utilities can benefit by improved coal transportation and increased revenue through more sales. Current plans for electrification both nationally and internationally are illustrated.
