Battle for Market Share Heats up on Playing Fields of New Orleans
Article Abstract:
The 1984 Softcon in New Orleans was the third major computer trade show in four months. Suppliers have discovered that it takes aggressive marketing and expertise, as well as a good product, to succeed in the software business. Software publishing is becoming a sophisticated business. New product announcements are the prime attraction for the estimated 18,000 attendees at the fair. A projected twenty-five million software packages will be sold in 1984, for $5.5 billion. Executives of the industry indicate that the software publishing industry is consolidating, and will become more like book publishing. Recreational software is taking a back seat at Softcon. A large group of new companies was looking for retail support at the fair.

On-line Information Services Tapping Retail Sales Network

There are presently over 200,000 subscribers to remote data services. Revenues from these services are expected to reach thirty billion dollars a year by the mid 1990s. Subscriber rate is growing at ninety-four percent a year. The industry provides great opportunities for retailers. Most subscribers are in the business community. CompuServe is the largest consumer oriented data base with over 10,000 subscribers. Most suppliers now sell moderately priced starter kits to new subscribers. Retailers are of prime importance in the Industry's attempt to reach the mass market.
