Digital A/V markets heat up; TV imports advance
Article Abstract:
Total shipments of color TVs in Japan in the 1st half of 1999 reached 4.192 million units, down by 3.6% from 1st half 1998. TVs with 4:3 aspect ratios grew by 4.7% to 3.644 million units in the 1st half 1998. Total shipments of console VCRs declined by 2.8% to 2.947 million units during the period while VCRs with excellent picture quality advabnced by 3.4% to 360,000 units. The total shipments, imports and exports of other audio and video products in Japan during the 1st half of 1999 are also presented.

The Japanese audio-video industry is looking at DVD-Audio and Super Audio CDs as potential market leaders in 1999. DVD Audio uses high sampling rates, larger bit rates and the high-volume capacity of DVDs to provide a superior sound quality with multiple-channel capabilities. Meanwhile, Super Audio CDs adopts a double layer-structure with one-high density layer and one-CD layer to improve the fine quality of current audio CDs.
