CED Demise: Death of a Concept
Article Abstract:
It was not the first time that an innovative product concept has gone wrong but RCA's decision to discontinue the CED videodisc was the most important in terms of what it says about the market. Sales of videodisc players were good and owner satisfaction was high. RCA's reasons were economic. As the perceived value of a videodisc player now hovers around $200, RCA felt that it could not make a reasonable return at this price level. RCA and CBS insist that they will continue to produce discs for the players. The demise of the CED player shouldn't affect the laser disc market is a big way.
