Climbing oil prices shrink Japan's trade surplus
Article Abstract:
Japan's Ministry of Finance reported that the country's trade surplus declined to 5.83 trillion yen, during the first half of FY 2000, 8% lower than for the corresponding period in 1999. The trade surplus has gone down for three consecutive six-month periods due to rising crude oil prices, which has increased the value of imports. The country's trade surplus with the US decreased slightly by 0.2% to 3.75 trillion yen, the first time that it has decreased since the first half of FY 1996.

Account surplus slips to 6.5 trillion yen in first-half FY1999
Article Abstract:
Statistics from the Japanese Ministry of Finance reveals that the country's account surplus for the first six months of FY1999 plummeted by 21.6% to 6.519 trillion yen in comparison to the same period in FY1998. The second consecutive half-year drop in account surplus is attributable to market conditions that include rising semiconductor and wood product imports from Asia, the continuing decline in the exports of steel and automobiles to the US and Europe and a dropping trade surplus.

Japan's current account surplus hits 985.2 billion yen
Article Abstract:
Japan's Finance Ministry reported that the country's current account surplus amounted to 985.2 billion yen in Aug 2000, 24.1% higher than during the year-ago period. It also marked the first year-on-year increase in four months' period after the surplus declined by 6.8% to 781.8 billion yen due to rising crude oil prices. However, the decrease was accompanied by a reduction in deficits in the services trade, mainly from the absence of a large aircraft leasing payment.
