Compact, sturdy optical discs attract users, offering large storage, random access
Article Abstract:
Magnetooptical (MO) discs in the 5.25-inch and 3.5-inch formats are popular with businesses because of their large capacities. However, erasing data on MO discs is an inconvenient two-step process that can be overcome by the adoption of direct-overwrite technologies. For instance, Sony is using a direct-overwrite system with a multiple-layer structure for its DOM-540C and DOM-640C MO discs. Direct overwriting can also be accomplished through optical modulation, the recording being done using high-power laser irradiation.
