Samsung Electronics Company Ltd strives to turn Korea's shift from analog to digital technologies to its own advantage. The company sees the transition as a rare opportunity to narrrow the technological gap separating it frm electronics gians in Japan and elsewhere. Samsung announced its ambition to become one of the to three digital electronics manufacturers by 2005. Underlying is goal is its strong position as a maker of key products that will represent the nuts and bolts of the emerging digital entertainment and information network.

Korea's digital plans awaken its consumer electronics industry

Korea is converting its terrestrial broadcasting services to digital formats late in 2001. Its three broadcasting stations began tests broadcasts on Sep 2000. The move is expected to revive the dormant Korean consumer electronics market, making way for the shift from analog to digital TVs. Digital set-to boxes will constitute the mainstream products until digital TVs become affordable for the average consumer. Thus, companies such as Global Technologies and Hyundai Digital Technology are cashing in on the market opportunity.
