Costs, disputes, lack of content hinder HDTV's U.S. progress
Article Abstract:
Consumer acceptance of terrestrial digital broadcasting in the US has been lagging due to the reluctance of program creators to shift to digital digital content production and the high cost of set-top boxes and projection TVs. The reluctance by broadcasters to shift to digital transmission formats and to adopt digital high-definition programming is attributable to the costly transition. Also, the shipments of digital TVs and set-top boxes through Sep 1999 were only 50,000 to 60,000 pieces which is far from the expected shipments of 150,000 to 160,000 units.
