December orders verify slipping chip equipment market
Article Abstract:
Makers of semiconductor equipment in North America reported $2.5 billion in orders in Dec 2000 with a book-to-bill ratio of 1.03, according to Semiconductor Equipment Materials International. A book-to-bill ratio of 1.03 means that orders were 3% higher than shipments for the month. The three-month average of bookings worldwide was $2.5 billion. This is 10% below the three-month average posted in November, but 29% above the $1.9 billion in orders reached in Dec 1999.

Toshiba takes No. 2 spot in global chip manufacturing

Toshiba Corp of Japan has emerged in 2000, as the second leading semiconductor manufacturer in the world. Accoridng to the Dataquest Div of Gartner Group Japan, Toshiba posted a sales increase of 47%. Intel Corp of the US stays in the top slot where it has remained for eight consecutive years. Intel, which has a dominant share in microprocessors for personal computers, accounts for 13.4% of the industry, 2.4 points down from 1999.

Global chip market to reach US$307 billion by 2003

The size of the semiconductor market worldwide is estimated to grow to $306.67 billion by 2003, according to the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics. In 2000, the global semiconductor market worldwide reached $207.9 billion, an increase of 39.2% over the previous year. The US accounted for 31.1% of the worldwide market in 2000, the Asia-Pacific region 25.6%, Japan 22.5% and Europe represented 20.6% of the total.
