Orders jump for Japan's device-making equipment
Article Abstract:
Orders for Japanese-branded semiconductor device manufacturing equipment reached 90.134 billion yen in Aug 1999, a 138.9%-increase from the industry's performance for the same month in 1998. The trend, attributed to increasing demand for such equipment overseas, is seen as an indication of the recovery of the industry and is expected to continue for the whole of 2000. Semiconductor makers report an increase in the demand for their devices from the digital household appliances, telephone and games industries.

Slowdown hinted as orders rise for chip-making equipment
Article Abstract:
The Semiconductor Equipment Assn of Japan (SEAJ) reported that orders for Japanese-made chip-making equipment rose by 85.5% in Jul 2000, compared with orders for Jul 1999. The SEAJ added that the figures may be impressive but they also point to a decline in sales volume. Orders for Apr, May and Jun 2000 were more than 100% than orders for the corresponding months in 1999. On the other hand, orders from Japanese chipmakers continued to rise, increasing by almost 200% in Jul 2000.
