Europe posts solid gains in information technology
Article Abstract:
The information and telecommunications technologies enjoy expanding markets in Western Europe. According to the European Information Technology Observatory (EITO), the technologies' 8% growth rate for 1997, had a combined market value of Ecu356 billion. Analysts have predicted that the technologies will have the same growth rate for 1998 and 1999, putting their combined market value at ecu385 bil and ecu415 bil, respectively. The EITO also said that information and technology spendings accounted for almost 5% of the gross domestic product of Western Europe.

Europeans race to cut phone rates
Article Abstract:
Telecommunications service providers in EU member nations have intensified their efforts to reduce communications rates as these nations, particularly Germany and France, enter their second year of telecommunications deregulation. For instance, Deutsche Telekom is slashing its domestic long-distance rates by 60% starting Jan 1, 1999. Deutsche Telekom had previously cut its basic communications rate by 71% in 1998. On the other hand, France Telecom will decrease its rates by an average of 14% this year.

Japanese agency sets up R&D project for communications
Article Abstract:
The Communications Research Laboratory (CRL) of Japan's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications is drawing up guidelines as it prepares itself as a venue of experiments and research in the future. The CRL has created the Vision 21 Committee to plan a core research project focusing on information and communications. The laboratory aims to become a world leader in research on radiowave and optical information and communications technologies.
