Female buyers help push stereo sales in Japan
Article Abstract:
The market for set stereos in Japan in 1999, surpassed 3 million sets for the first time. The expanding demand is attributable to three trends: the proliferation of MiniDiscs as recording media, a drop in prices and the emerging interest in stereos from female customers. The set-stereo market peaked at 2.3 million sets in 1988, declined and went up again when models equipped with MD players appeared. The industry expects demand to remain strong as users gradually make the transition to models equipped with CD-R or DVD players.

Stereo demand sets new record in Japan
Article Abstract:
Japanese demand for stereo systems increased by 13% in 1999, reaching 2.96 million units compared to 1998's record of 2.62 million units. For the year 2000, it is predicted that the demand for stereo sets will further increase to about 3 million units. The continued expansion of the market is attributed to the introduction of affordable products costing 30,000 to 40,000 yen, and increased consumer appeal of microcomponent systems.
