Japanese industry concentrates on communications activitis

The government and the business sectors in Japan are expected to complete a number of telecommunications projects by the year 2000. One company, DDI Corp, is planning to installed a 2,800-km optical fiber network between 1998 and 2002, while a working group under the Communications Industry Assn of Japan has launched a program to promote the adoption of digital cordless phones based on Japan's Personal Handy Phone System.

Japanese MPT sets date for digital broadcasts
Article Abstract:
Japan's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) announced that digital broadcasts will completely replace conventional analog broadcasting in the country in 2010. According to the MPT's plan, digital broadcasts will be tested first in the Kanto region, including Tokyo and Yokohama, in 2000. Tests in the Chukyo area will begin by the end of 2003. Nationwide digital broadcasts have been slated for 2006.
