Longest submarine cable injected with silicone
Article Abstract:
Northern States Power Co. prolonged the service life of its submarine cable by injecting it with silicone fluid. The 10,702-ft. submarine cable, which transmits electricity to Madeline Island, WI, had already exceeded its life expectancy by 3 years when the company decided to keep the cable instead of replacing it. If the cable lasts an extra year, the silicone experiment will have been successful.
