Matsushita expands capacity to keep pace wit DVD demand

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd expects shipments of DVD players to grow significantly in 1999, particularly in the US. The company is projecting US shipments to reach up to 3 million units in 1999, an upward revision of an earlier forecast of about 2 million units. The company also expects demand in Japan and Europe to double in 1999. Worldwide, demand is likely to exceed 5 million units, said Kenjiro Kuno, president of AVC Co's Optical Disk Systems Division.

Demand for audio-video measuring instruments steady

A steady demand for measuring instruments used for digital audio-video (A/V) devices is projected for 1999. The growth in this market is fueled by rising demand and growing production of digital A/V products, such as digital video-cassette camcorders, digital video disc players and minidisc players. Another factor is the shift to terrestrial digital broadcasts in the US, Japan and Europe.

DVDs percolate through household A/V sectors
Article Abstract:
The demand for digital video disk (DVD) players is expected to surge in 1999. Fueling the demand is the trend towards combining DVD equipment with large-screen TVs and audio-video amplifiers to create a home theater system. Another factor is the increasing the number of DVD titles. In Japan, demand for DVD players reached about 400,000 units in 1998, compared with 167,000 units in 1997.
