Sharp maps A/V strategies in Europe, expands development

Japan-based Sharp Corp plans to strengthen its activities in Europe by unveiling new products at the forthcoming Internationale Funkaustellung Berlin 1999 event. It also plans to launch televisions with digital decoders, digital-ready models and set-top boxes in Europe, where it desires to capture a 30% share in the market for 28- to 32-inch wide- screen flat TVs. It is promoting sales of its digital video disc products in Europe and will launch a line of its MD equipment there.

USA manufacturer Philips Display Components is introducing its Cybertube flat-surface screen technology to the market in 1999. This technology offers viewers a fine-quality picture as well as providing home cinema and interactive computer functions on one screen. The first model in the company's Cybertube line is a 32-inch wide-screen set, with Philips Display Components planning to introduce a 28- and 36-inch wide-screen version at a later date.

Philips Display Components has unveiled its family of Cybertube digital TV-ready sets. First to come out from the flat-panel line will be 32-in wide-screen sets, with 28- and 36-in wide screen versions to follow. Cybertube sets provide fine-quality picture and combines home cinema and interactive computer functions on a single screen. The technology works with existing circuits, which is a plus factor for set makers.
