Matsushita outfits to focus on flash memories, system LSIs

Matsushita Electronics Corp and Matsushita Electric Industrial Company Ltd, which both have recorded recorded yearly growth rates of over 70% since 1997, will concentrate on system LSIs, flash memories and other growth semiconductor areas. Matsushita Electronics will drop its DRAM business, citing its inability to secure a fair prospect for the future of the DRAM market. Meanwhile, Matsushita Electric created the System LSI Division as part of its plan to focus on growth semiconductor areas.

Rohm moves in constant quest of quality improvements at all levels
Article Abstract:
Japanese semiconductor maker Rohm will spend 51.6 billion yen in new equipment for 1998, 13.6 billion yen higher than the amount spent for purchases of new equipment in 1997. Junichi Hikida, managing director of Rohm, said the investments will not result in short-term profits but will help the company create more advanced products. The company intends to have a zero defect rate, which it will realize by reducing its current defect rate by an order of one.
