Measuring instruments size up chances for growth
Article Abstract:
The Japan Electric Measuring Instruments Manufacturers Assn (JEMIMA) predicts global demand for electronic measuring instruments would grow by 3% annually between 1999 and 2002. JEMIMA based its prediction on strong demand for these devices from the information, communications and optical devices industries. The association projects demand would rise by 9.2% to 731.4 billion yen in 1999 and by 12.3% to 825.1 billion yen in 2000. By 2002, demand would rise to 7.8% at a value of 950.8 billion yen.

System LSIs stimulate rising competition
Article Abstract:
The Electronic Industries Assn of Japan (EIAJ) predicts that the global market for system LSIs could rise from $1.58 billion in 1997 to $13.5 billion in 2001. The EIAJ says semi-custom development devices, such as user-logic LSIs and general-purpose memories, would account for $10.4 billion of the $13.5 billion. The remaining amount would involve proprietary cores including CPUs, digital signal processors and MPEG devices.
