Need for small rechargeable batteries surges on with market growth
Article Abstract:
The demand for small rechargeable batteries, which have popular applications in mobile phones and notebook computers, continues to grow worldwide. Growth rates for the months of Apr to Sep of FY1999 are 45% for lithium ion, over 36% for nickel metal hydride and 2% for nickel cadmium batteries. Growth is attributable to exports to a large portion of the global market. Since nickel metal hydride batteries are mostly used in countries outside of Japan, their export rates are greater than those of lithium ion batteries which are used in almost all mobile phones in Japan.

Progress in rechargeable batteries sparks moves in hybrid vehicles
Article Abstract:
Rechargeable batteries are beginning to find adherents in the electric vehicle sector. Batteries for electric vehicles should offer advanced performance which matches that of lead rechargeable and Ni-Cd rechargeable batteries. The promising candidates include lithium ion and Ni-MH rechargeable batteries as well as electric double-layer capacitors. Engineers are still searching for the technological breakthroughs that can ensure the safety of using such batteries while lowering the cost of lithium ion batteries for use in electric cars.

Makers push for small, light, reliable rechargeable batteries
Article Abstract:
Battery manufacturers are focusing their product development efforts on smaller, lighter and higher-performance rechargeable batteries to cope with increasing demand from makers of portable electronic products. From the 1980s to the 1990s, battery companies have succeeded in improving the energy densities of nickel-cadmium, nickel metal hydride and lithium ion batteries every year. Meanwhile, several research efforts are being conducted on polymer batteries, which are seen as the next-generation batteries.
