Kenwood expands portable MD player sales drive

Kenwood Corp is aiming for a 20%-increase in the sale of portable MiniDisc (MD) players for the first half of FY2000. The company, which is focusing its marketing on MD radiocassettes, MD stereos and portable MD players, expects a 100-billion-yen yearly demand for the products in the Japanese market. Kenwood, which has failed to gain a significant share of the portable MD market since its entry into the category over 10 years ago, is hoping to improve its performance through the popularity of its Rampage E3 players.

The company, which has been exporting its MD audio players since 1996, has responded to recent positive reaction from consumers with the introduction of new full-sized players and recorders. Kenwood, a firm that specializes in audio equipment for car and home use, makes the same product divisions for its MD offerings.

Sharp expands lineup, targets 50% share of MD audio market

Sharp Corp of Japan intends to capitalize on the improving market for MiniDiscs (MDs) by using its own technologies to create unique products and hopefully corner half of the existing market. The company, which has been marketing MDs overseas since 1994, plans to enhance its sales efforts in Europe, North America, Asia and the US. Sharp's new MD releases will include minicomponent systems, system bundles, component systems and portable record-and-play equipment.
