Rapid recovery recharges semiconductor industry
Article Abstract:
The global semiconductor market is posting a rapid recovery after bottoming out toward the end of 1998. The uptrend has been attributed to the expansion of the mobile phone market, increasing amount of orders for semiconductors used in PCs and computer peripherals and the recovery in the Southeast Asia's production of audio-video equipment. As a result, Japanese semiconductor makers have been operating at 100% capacity, with some reporting shortages in flash memories of mobile phoes or in LCD drivers and high-frequency device.

Semiconductor devices take 1 step forward, 1 back
Article Abstract:
Japanese manufacturers of semiconductor devices including silicon diodes, transistors and optical conversion devices expect output to increase by 1% to 920 billion yen in 1999. The 1% rise would allow the industry to recover the 1% it lost when output reached only 910 billion yen in 1998. The growing demand for MOSFETs and laser diodes would propel higher growth in 1999. On the other hand, semiconductor manufacturers attribute their loss in 1998 to higher demand for optical products such as CD, DVD and MiniDisc players.
