Rohm powers up factories in Japan, abroad for value plus volume
Article Abstract:
Rohm Company Ltd is investing 72 billion yen for plants and equipment for FY2001, representng a 14 billion yen increase from 1999 figures. Rohm allocated 41 billion yen for investments in plants and equipment for the first half of FY2000. The company is building an additional 4,000-sq-m factory at its headquarters in Kyoto, Japan, to handle the production of gallium-arsenide devices. The facility is scheduled for completion in spring 2001.

Rohm, Kyoto University find way to grow ZnO films on sapphire substrates
Article Abstract:
Rohm Company Ltd, Rohm Corp and the Electrotechnical Laboratory of Kyoto University have found a way to grow semiconductor-grade zinc-oxide (ZnO) films on sapphire substrates. The developed zinc-oxide materials can be used to fabricate optical and electronic devices that operate with blue or ultraviolet wavelengths. ZnO films are ideal for this application because these films offer much larger excitonic binding energy.
