Royal Air Force turning to COTS to support its Harriers

The UK Royal Air Force has adopted the Commercial Off-The-Shelf approach to obtaining military equipment. This approach involves purchasing commercial equipment because military operations in 1995 do not require the stringent specifications and requirements previous defense procurement operations demanded. The commercial equipment is then packed in special cases to protect it from harsh treatment and difficult environments.

Article Abstract:
The defense electronics industry's future contains uncertain areas, as well as some surprises. Changes in currency and the competitive environment, in addition to diminished defense budgets, has impacted the industry. Advanced technologies for military applications will not be pursued by private business as readily as they have in the past. Weapon procurement has become more expensive, yet the pressure to buy is greater.
