Samsung forms Alpha Processor subsidiary
Article Abstract:
Samsung Electronics Company has created an independent division called Alpha Processor Inc. (API). The new subsidiary, which is based in Boston, MA, will focus mainly on marketing and technical support of the Alpha microprocessors, which are based on an open industry standard architecture and are said to be the only 64-bit Windows NT solutions available in the market today. API, which has hired several workers from Samsung, Digital Equipment Corp. and other firms, stated that it intends to release high-tech products by 2000.

Intel licenses pentium to U.S. government
Article Abstract:
Intel Corp of Santa Clara, CA, will make its Pentium processing design available to the Department of Energy's Sandia National Laboratory under a royalty-free licensing deal. The company, which has had similar deals with the US government in the past, developed the processor at a cost estimated at over $1 bil. Sandia, which will share the license with other government laboratories, will develop a radiation-hardened version of the processor for use in defense systems, space vehicles and satellites.

Hewlett-Packard Co of Palo Alto, CA, has announced the name of its new spin-off company. Agilent Technologies inherits HP's former measurement and component business, while HP retains the $39.5 billion computer and imaging business. Agilent, from the outstart, will be the world's leading supplier of test and measurement equipment as well as communications components for the electronics, semiconductor, communications, life science and health care industries.
