Japanese manufacturer Sharp Corp has been a leading supplier of digital camcorders since 1993. The shift from analog to digital camcorders has prompted the company to diversify its market scope and product lineup. It has added digital models to its ViewCam and SlimCam series since Feb 1998, beginning in the US and gradually moving to Europe. Sharp is adding nine models to its camcorder lineup in 1998, altogether. The company is also offering different variations of its SlimCam series in each region to match diverse preferences.

Sharp Corp (Japan) adopts the appropriate marketing orientation for every geographical market for its camcorder models, as it seeks to post at least a 10% growth in sales in 1998. The company has expended its camcorder offerings with nine new variants, including digital models under its SlimCam and ViewCam series. Several of its camcorders already feature color viewfinders and LCD monitors, including its high-end SW50, which offers picture-in-picture recording and continuous recording time of as long as 375 minutes.

With Slimcam in lineup, Sharp aims for 10% of camcorder market
Article Abstract:
Sharp Corp intends to capture 10% of the world's camcorder market with the introduction of its Slimcam model in 1998. The Slimcam features a viewfinder and an LCD. While Sharp still produces analog camcorders, it foresees that demand for digital models will grow and supplant analog models. In Oct 1998, Sharp introduced the VL-PD3, a digital Slimcam model with a 2.5-in LCD using the nickel-metal hydride or lithium ion rechargeable batteries used by the Viewcan model.
