Weak networks, cooling customer interest hurt PHS
Article Abstract:
Subscription to Japan's Personal Handy Phone System (PHS) has continued to decline, forcing carriers to abandon the service. PHS features extremely compact terminals, excellent speech quality and a 32kbps transmission rate in digital format. However, it is suitable only for walking speeds and cannot be used inside vehicles. Nippon Telegraph and Telephone has abolished its NTT Personal Group, which oversees PHS, and has shifted remaining PHS operators to the NTT DoCoMo group.
