MiniDiscs keep rolling, help Sony maintain momentum in car audio

Sony Corp is relying on its MiniDisc (MD) technology to differentiate itself in the automobile audio market. It is positioning MDs as a central feature to boost sales of car audio equipment. The company is already offering diverse system variations on the theme of an MD receiver system with a compact disc changer. It introduced MD equipment first in Japan, then in Europe. It will market MD equipment in the US in 1998. Sony considers prospects discouraging for the MD in the Asian market.

Mask system, car navigators ring in harmony with Kenwood's plans

Japanese company Kenwood Corp has reinforced its product line of compact disc head units with automobile audio-video systems featuring its Mask design. The Kenwood Mask panel links to auto ignitions. The Kenwood Stealth Retraction Mechanism rotates automobile audio systems' operation panel inward, when the key is out of the ignition, and outward, when the key is in the ignition. The firm has generated double-digit sales growth in the US and European car aftermarkets in 1998.
