A bullish outlook for office and industrial construction
Article Abstract:
Office construction expenditure is expected to reach $35.2 billion in 1998, an increase of 9.8% from 1997 figures. The figures reflect a general increase in commercial construction spending that is expected to total $97.8 billion in 1998, a 4.2% increase from 1997, a development that follows a somewhat sluggish start for 1998. Industrial construction figures is expected to amount to $31.2 billion in 1998, an improvement of only 1.8% over the expenditure incurred in 1997 but a first-time increase in spending for the sector for the past two years.

Green gestalt
Article Abstract:
The construction of environmentally sustainable buildings has become a priority for engineers, architects and specifiers. A synergistic, whole- building approach is needed in sustainable design and engineering. In such an approach, interactions between building systems are utilized to attain large energy savings at minimal first-cost increases. An example is the integration of an effective thermal envelope with efficient lighting, low- emission finish materials and effective ventilation.
