Fuel cells for homes and hospitals
Article Abstract:
Fuel cell designers are developing technology to power large buildings or a single home according to Ronald H. Wolk, Wolk Integrated Technical Svcs. They have had success in finding promising car and bus applications, which has given them an incentive to move to other applications, in an effort to find environmentally kind ways to fulfill power needs. The fuel cells generate clean dc power efficiently and directly with water, heat and, if the hydrogen, the consumed material, comes from a fossil fuel, carbon dioxide. Economically they have not been feasible, but that may in time be overcome. Companies discussed include Plug Power, ECN (Netherlands), Energy Research Corp., Daimler-Benz AG, GE Power Systems, GE Fuel Cell Systems, Avista, NuPower, H Power, Epyx, Haldor-Topsoe (Denmark), Hydrogen Burner Technology, American Power, DaimlerChrysler, Siemens Westinghouse Power, Ztek, ONSI, Ballard Power Systems, subsidiary of Ballard Power Systems (Canada), Analytic Power, Stewart & Stevenson, Bechtel Power, and M-C Power.

The practical engineer
Article Abstract:
A likely reason for unacceptably low yields as a electronics product project transitions from design to production is overlooking effects of the stochastic nature of the manufacturing process according to Dan Stoneking of Hewlett-Packard. Random fluctuations may have been erroneously assumed to cancel each other out. The application in advance of statistical circuit design techniques may prevent such practical cost-effectiveness problems. Such techniques analyze yields of circuit designs for which underlying components show random fluctuation. Nonparametric boundary analysis (NBA) is a technique that allows for yield analysis if random fluctuations come from arbitrary stochastic process as well as well-studied processes. Application of the NBA method and dimensionality considerations are discussed.
