A genetic approach to the scheduling of preventive maintenance tasks on a single product manufacturing production line
Article Abstract:
The present article deals with optimising the schedule of maintenance tasks of all the machines in a single product manufacturing production line. This study was made in the context of one machine assigned to one operator. This operator intervenes to change tools during a stoppage. Our goal is to increase the overall through-put of the line. We firstly formalised the problem and showed the difficulty of its analytical resolution. Then, we presented the software environment that enables the resolution of this problem: it is made up of a simulator of the production line and an optimiser using the genetic algorithms. Our approach to the scheduling of maintenance tasks was validated upon an actual production line of car engines. We focused our study on the setting of parameters of a genetic algorithm. We proceeded with a systematic approach inspired by the Taguchi method to find the best combination of levels for each studied parameter and performed a statistical confirmation of the results. Finally we validated the genetic approach as against naive optimisation. Keywords: Scheduling; Genetic algorithm; Discrete event systems simulation; Single product; Tools changes

A network approach to operate agile manufacturing systems
Article Abstract:
This paper presents and illustrates a strategic framework for designing and operating agile networked manufacturing systems. This framework allows to collaboratively plan, control and manage day-to-day operations and contingencies in a dynamic environment. The first section summarizes the NetMan organizational and collaboration strategy. It consists of a dynamic business method to organize and operate manufacturing activities through the configuration, activation and operation of a distributed network of inter-dependent and responsible manufacturing centers. Next, the concepts underlying this strategic framework as well as the technical implications of such an approach, are illustrated, using a detailed case study inspired by a motorcoach industrial partner. Keywords: Networked manufacturing; Collaborative manufacturing; Complex product assembly; Agile manufacturing systems; Distributed planning and control; Contingency management; Multi-agent systems

Manufacturing flexibility and real options: a review
Article Abstract:
This paper considers manufacturing flexibility and real options from an industrial engineering/production management perspective. Real options papers are related to different types of manufacturing flexibility in order to show which types that are considered and in what way they are considered. Flexibility types not valued with real options and real options without any corresponding manufacturing flexibility type are identified and discussed. Keywords: Real options; Manufacturing flexibility; Capital budgeting; Production management
