A revolution in lamp posts
Article Abstract:
Aluminium is a lightweight material which can be easily transported and handled and as such is an ideal material for lighting columns. It will also give more than 40 years use without maintenance and has a high scrap value. Lighting poles which yield on impact are valued in Scandinavia and a new development of the mid-1990s is the combination of extruded aluminium for easy yielding with steel rod reinforcements for wind resistance. Aluminium lighting columns have not been utilized in the UK but have been used since the 1950s on the continent of Europe and in the US.

Reading the signs
Article Abstract:
Aluminium is extensively used in the sign industry because of its flexibility, aesthetic appearance, strength and resistance to the elements. Internal and external systems from Spandex, Arken Display, Insight and Modulex Systems are described. The qualities of aluminium which are of benefit to the traffic sign industry are noted, an example of use being very large variable message signs which give information to motorists approaching the Channel Tunnel in England.
