A solar detoxification process that works even on cloudy days
Article Abstract:
An experimental system that uses solar energy and titanium dioxide (TiO2) catalysts to detoxify wastewater with chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents (CHCs) is undergoing pilot testing at Hidrocen SL, near Madrid, Spain. The photocatalytic oxidation of the CHCs occurs in a compound-parabolic concentrator, made up of a series of parabolic-trough solar reflectors, each with a borosilicate-glass reactor tube at its focal point. The wastewater along with the TiO2 catalysts are circulated through the tube, producing hydroxyl radicals through ultraviolet radiation.

Flotation made simpler and cheaper
Article Abstract:
Arcanoe Water Technologies, in cooperation with the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia, has developed a cost efficient method of dissolved- air flotation for wastewater treatment. The method uses an inductive- dispersing nozzle that effectively reduces initial capital outlay by 20% compared to standard designs. The technique, which allows payback in about two years due to lesser energy consumption, is already being implemented in two pharmaceutical plants in Slovenia.
