One reactor does the work of two for polyolefins production
Article Abstract:
Montell Polyolefins BV of Hoofddorp, Netherlands, has devised a method of olefin gas-phase polymerization using only a single reactor. The company is able to perform the two gas-phase polymerization process in two interconnected sections of what it calls a multizone-circulating reactor. Montell claims to have achieved homogeneous blends of polymer alloys within individual particles of either polypropylene or polyethylene as well as broad mmolecular-weight distribution.

Surface texturing dramatically improves the performance of mechanical seals
Article Abstract:
A surface texturing technique that is capable of improving the performance of mechanical seals has been developed at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel. The method, which is called laser surface texturing, utilizes a pulsed YAG laser in forming micropores that are 3.5- 6 micrometers in depth and about 100 micrometers in diameter at the surface of one of the seal-mating rings. The technique is already available for license to interested parties.

A faster, cheaper way to do surface analysis
Article Abstract:
PMI Inc of Ithaca, NY, has developed a novel means of surface-area characterization that offers faster, simpler and more accurate results compared to conventional nitrogen-absorption techniques. The technique, which can be used on porous, fiber and powder materials having a surface area of 0.1-10 sq-m/g, uses flow parameters such as gas flowrate and pressure drop. It also uses a Windows-based software to calaculate average particle size as well as through-pore surface area.
