Methyl bromide alternative
Article Abstract:
The EPA has approved a new biopesticide made by Eden Bioscience as the first replacement to the soil fumigant methyl bromide. The biochemical, called Messenger, includes one of the harpin group of proteins produced by certain bacterial plant pathogens. The harpin proteins have been approved by the EPA for controlling bacterial and viral pathogens on all food commodities, tree, turf and ornamental plants. These proteins do not act directly on the pathogens but triggers the host plant's natural defense mechanism.

Another Phillips tragedy
Article Abstract:
The fire that killed a worker and injured 70 other at Phillips Petroluem's Houston Chemical Complex (HCC) may have been caused by the reaction of residual butadiene with styrene-butadiene copolymer in an empty butadiene tank. HCC Gen Mgr James Ross said the tank was offline and in purge mode but may have contained sufficient amounts of both chemicals to cause a reaction. The polymer may have blocked the purge lines of the tank, which eventually burst.
