New aluminium impact energy absorbers have been developed to improve the crash-worthiness of automobiles. Engineers worked with a leading car manufacturer to test different materials including steel, aluminium and composites, followed by the development of concept crash units based on two-step inversion, pulverisaiton and buckling. It was found that the inversion principle had better energy absorbing capacity than traditional buckling, although buckling units were reliable and simple

IMI Norgren Ltd. has redesigned its Olympian 13 range of air line units. The units feature sterolithographic components covered in a metal alloy with a low melting point. They have their own patented sight glass. The units are compatible with the earlier version. They also have detents so that disassembly is impossible when the unit is under pressure.
