AT&T grafting Bell Labs' heritage onto AT&T Labs
Article Abstract:
The new AT&T that emerged from the divestiture of its parent company into three parts left it without an industrial-research laboratory of its own. Lucent Technologies, another AT&T offspring, absorbed the bulk of the professional staff of Bell Labs, which used to be the overall research entity for the whole AT&T. As a solution, the new AT&T created AT&T Labs, which has 2,000 professional employees. Management at the laboratory promises to maintain the scientific excellence of its forebear Bell Labs to ensure its success.

Hong Kong profs group to spur local technology
Article Abstract:
A group of academics from local college-level institutions hasbanded together in an effort to spur research and development in the country. The professors have established Varsity Resources Ltd, a firm that will offer consulting services and other assistance to industries that wish to venture into new industrial endeavors. Such a move is largely seen as beneficial not only to Hong Kong industrialists but also to academics, as the 3,000 to 4,000 doctorate degree holders in the colony are largely underutilized.
