Asia challenges Whirlpool technology
Article Abstract:
Whirlpool Corp acquired four Chinese and two Indian appliance firms as joint ventures (JV) in order to transform itself into a major international competitor. The major challenges in Whirlpool's Asian acquisitions were in applying its R&D and technology operations to its JV operations. The problems encountered include incompatible skill levels, lack of equipment, different quality standards and language. Whirlpool organized 'SWAT' teams composed of manufacturing engineers who could quickly make corrections in the manufacturing process of its JV firms to improve quality and technology.
