At home in the office: business districts across the country harbour disused commercial property which is ripe for convrsion to housing. Fine in theory? Maybe, but much needs to be done to make the areas more amenable to prospective residents
Article Abstract:
There is a significant number of unlet commercial buildings and councils and developers are eager to bring new tenants into disused commercial buildings, particularly in London. Housing seems an obvious use, as councils throughout the country promote urban living and the 24-hour city. However the number of suitable properties is limited and the sites are not likely to bring in the same returns from residential use as commercial use. Business districts also lack many amenities, particularly retail outlets.

Rising to the challenge
Article Abstract:
The UK Single Regeneration Budget is geared to promoting urban renewal. Small bids have less chance of success, and bidders benefit from professional advice. The government aims to help boost local businesses, stimulate the creation of wealth and help alleviate need. Projects may need to be effective in more than one area. Bids to improve housing projects clear need to tackle a number of issues such as housing, design, health and community safety.
