Battle of the greenfield: with the real meaning of 'sustainable development' still a very moot point, how can the Government, planners and, ultimately, the public decide on whee housing land should be allocated? possibilities need to be tried and tested
Article Abstract:
The main question in the debate about housing land allocations is where the required 4.4 million homes needed by 2016 will go. Choices include squeezing new development into urban areas, building new settlements or allocating greenfield sites. Ian Collis of David Tyldesley and Associates, environmental planners, believes that 2.4 milion of the homes would need to go on greenfield land destroying premium farmland and spoiling rural landscapes. Urban regeneration is seen as the sensible approach to sustainable and cost effective planning.

Plain sailing for estuary initiatives: wide consultation and a tight team have made Gwent's coastal planning work a success
Article Abstract:
Gwent County Council is involved in several initiatives aimed at sustainable management of the coastal levels. The Welsh Levels, or the Reens, combine drained land and estuarine mud flats and have remained largely undeveloped. They are threatened by development, pollution, flooding and recreation. New strategies will cover a broader range of issues providing a co-ordinated aproach to the Severn estuary as a whole.
