Back to the kitchen sink drama: questions still arise regarding the connection of green and yellow cables to a metallic kitchen sink despite all the explanations about the principles of earthing and bonding
Article Abstract:
There are still questions as to whether a metallic sink is an extraneous conductive part of an installation, and the definition in the Wiring Regulations should be consulted. Earthing relates to the interconnection of exposed conductive parts of an electrical installation and bonding involves creating an equipotential zone by interconnecting extraneous and exposed conductive parts. Connecting green/yellow wires to a metallic sink may actually introduce a hazard.

Clearing the confusion over earthing and bonding
Article Abstract:
The 16th Edition ofthe IEE Wiring Regulations stipulates requirements for the protection of circuits by bonding. The earthed equipotential bonding and automatic disconnection of supply principle is used. This ensures the same potential is maintained in all parts of the circuit. All metal pipes entering a building must be bonded but suplementary bonding is unnecessary except in bathrooms.

Coping with bathrooms
Article Abstract:
Additions to the Wiring Regulations mean that electrical equipment may not be installed within a bath or shower and no metal wiring system may be exposed on surfaces in a bathroom. Switching amendments mean that certain switches and electrical controls must not be able to be reached by the person using the bath, such as shaver supply units.
