Balancing acts: pressure for new housing land whilst avoiding the danger of 'town cramming' has been highlighted in some recent decisions
Article Abstract:
The pressure for residential development has continued and developers may seek to increase densities to meet the demand. However most local authorities want to ensure that there are adequate levels of open space and avoid town cramming. Recent decisions reflect such trends including plans to develop dwellings in Wantage and the initial refusal of planning permission for semi detached houses in Dinton, where the council decided that scheme was too dense in relation to surrounding areas. However the inspector decided that the development was in accord with relevant development plan policies.

The sands of time: a recent decision in Surrey, shows why mineral applications can cause so much local concern
Article Abstract:
Mineral extraction is the cause of much public concern and considerable planning debate, because of the visual changes to the landscape and increased traffic. Two proposals in Surrey involved the retention of an existing plant and extraction of sand at sites at the Princess Royal Sand Pit in Runfold. The inspector felt that a new landfill site did not fit policy trends but believed that the county's timescale for introducing alternative waste disposal means was optimistic. Planning permission was granted although several conditions were imposed.
