Fuzzy logic flowers in Japan
Article Abstract:
Japanese companies are using fuzzy logic in the control systems of products ranging from cameras to helicopters and are taking advantage of a control technology that is easier to design and cheaper to produce than conventional proportional, integral and differential controllers. The idea for fuzzy logic was first presented in 1965 and hinges on the use of non-specific input. In 1991 Japan controlled almost 80 percent of the worldwide fuzzy logic market. Revenues are expected to climb from $150 million in 1991 to $350 million in 1992. The focus of fuzzy logic control is on the human operator's behavior, unlike tradition systems, which focus on the process rather than the person involved. Fuzzy logic controllers are being used in air conditioners, washing machines, automobiles and electric fans. Researchers are also studying other uses for the technology.

New technology directions
Article Abstract:
IEEE Technical Activities Board's New Technology Directions Committee (NTDC) concludes there are seven challenges facing electrotechnology. The NTDC attempts to keep the international community updated on the latest and most significant technical papers. The Portfolio of Emerging Technologies is published each month by NTDC and has an audience with young engineers planning their careers, investors, entrepreneurs, technical publications and the IEEE technical societies. The Portfolio describes technologies ranging from power electronics to diamond deposition to standards. Several areas not adequately covered by existing technical societies are pinpointed by the NTDC, including flat-panel displays, materials in electrotechnology, health and safety, electric energy and the environment.
