Chemical fingerprint tool checks quality online
Article Abstract:
Foster-Miller Inc of Waltham, MA, in cooperation with the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, OH, has developed an infrared (IR) sensor capable of online monitoring of fluid contamination and degradation. The device, called the oil-condition monitor, identifies fuel degradation through the absorption of IR signals. A prototype of the device, which is expected to cost below $10,000, has been successfully tested at the air base.

A 'natural' insecticide from a sweet source
Article Abstract:
AVA Chemical Ventures has developed insecticides that decompose into harmless sugars and fatty acids. The novel insecticides are made from sugar esters and can be used with mites and soft-bodied insects. The active ingredient of the insecticides is a sucrose octanoate, which is made from the esterification of a short-chain fatty acid derived from vegetable oil. AVA claims the insecticides are not detrimental to friendly insects such as bees and lady beetles.
