'Smart' centrifuge optimizes dewatering
Article Abstract:
Baker Process of Houston, TX, has introduced its Smart-Basket centrifuge, a device that is touted to be capable of increasing throughput by as much as 50% through optimized dewatering. The device, which has been presented at the Mar 2000, meeting of the American Filtration Society held in Myrtle Beach, SC, monitors cake moisture continuously while in operation. It uses a mass flowmeter to measure both the bulk specific gravity and flowrate of the feed slurry.

May the shear force be with you!
Article Abstract:
Material Sciences Corp (MSC) of Elk Grove Village, IL, has developed a technology for mixing plastics that are difficult to blend using conventional melt-extrusion techniques. The technique, called Solid State Shear Pulverization (S3P), combines the plastic materials without using heat and might be capable of producing new plastics that have advanced properties. MSC's S3P extrusion process uses high shear rates and pressures to break the chemical bonds that exist between molecules.

Flow measurement in high-pressure gas lines made simple
Article Abstract:
Fluid Components has introduced thermal mass flowmeters that allows the flow element to be inserted or withdrawn from a pressurized pipeline within 2 seconds. Previously the procedure took 15 minutes, according to Fritz Stumpges, Fluid Components' special projects engineer. The flowmeters incorporate a hydraulic system developed by Welker Engineering Co. The flow element is introduced into the pipe via a moving support that extends into the center of the pipe.
