Melt crystallization heats up
Article Abstract:
The renewed interest in static melt crystallization is driven by factors such as a strong interest in reducing energy consumption and operating costs, increasing purity requirements for targeted applications and more stringent environmental laws on plant emissions. Its main advantages are solvent-free operation, the absence of slurry handling, centrifugation or filtration and no moving parts except pumps and valves.

Polymers gain from self-assembly
Article Abstract:
Researchers worldwide are beginning to unlock some of the secrets of polymers that have the ability to self-assemble, in hopes of creating more novel or effective materials. Self-assembling peptide systems are already being developed to produce the biological structure that is required to support the regeneration of human tissue. Self-assembled monolayers are being developed for applications such as computer hard disk coatings.

Combinatorial chemistry promises better catalysts and materials
Article Abstract:
Researchers are using combinatorial chemistry to develop better catalysts and create new materials more quickly. Combinatorial chemistry can synthesize microscale quantities of compounds and test them quickly and reliably by a variety of methods such as laser and photoionization techniques. For instance, professor Selim Senkan of UCLA is using combinatorial chemistry to discover new catalysts. He says the study of catalytic activity requires the detection of a specific product molecule above a small catalytic site on a large library.
