Commitment from the top makes it work
Article Abstract:
Hughes Aircraft Co reports that it began focusing on workforce diversity in 1987 because industry research forecasts that a large number of minorities and women will be entering the workforce in the 21st century. Hughes, which has had affirmative action programs for two decades, believes the forecasts are very important and has utilized numerous strategies to address diversity as well as the perceived shortages of engineers and scientists in the US. The firm has created an employee networking organization to encourage communication between management and employees. The firm also has a mentoring program. In addition, Hughes has created an educational 'pipeline' in high schools to encourage promising students to enter science and engineering. Part of the program is Hughes' sponsorship of the Youth Motivation Task Force, a group of several hundreds of employees who regularly visit high schools and junior highs to motivate students to obtain technical educations.

Aerospace and defense
Article Abstract:
Integrating members' individual capabilities into a unified, noncontentious entity is the biggest challenge facing the members of the European Communities in the aerospace area. A number of mergers in West Germany and and France, may indicate, however, that those two countries want to develop their own economies of scale to remain competitive in what has become a stagnating defense market and an increasingly profitable civilian aerospace market. There are two examples of European cooperativeness in the aerospace field: European Space Agency, a consortium of the national space research agencies of 13 countries, and Arianespace SA, which builds and launches the Ariane rockets. One of the biggest questions today is what will happen in the defense sector as rising costs and changing politics force a restructuring of the European defense industry.
