Delegates at the 1997 ECA Electrical Industry Conference participated in workshops, and listened to speakers, emphasizing the need for collective action to improve practices promoting industry competitiveness. Speakers included ECA President Bob Harris, who urged delegates to support the work of the Construction Industry Board as it sought to implement the recommendations of the the Latham report on constructing the team. ECA Immediate Past President Alan Thompson emphasized the need to develop the potential of industry employees through training and involvement.

The main speakers at the Electrical Contractors' Assn (ECA) 1992 annual dinner adopted a positive outlook, focussing on successes and achievements rather than mentioning the recession. Sec of State for Employment Michael Howard concentrated on the government's achievements, particularly in the area of training. While highlighting the electrical contracting industry's recruitment successes, ECA president Jim Dougal also called for equitable contractual terms and conditions for electrical engineering services companies working on construction projects.
