DaimlerChrysler eyes trim quality
Article Abstract:
DaimlerChrysler has recently adopted a vision inspection system in an effort to enhance trim quality, while significantly reducing monitoring time. The system, currently employed in Daimler's assembly plant in Belvidere, IL, enables the company to monitor a Neon unit every 45 seconds. In order to ensure a high inspection accuracy, Daimler housed the system within a black steel enclosure, which is lit by high-frequency fluorescent lights with 15,000-Hz ballasts. Daimler reported a significant decrease in the number of advocacy reports filed by consumers since the system was used in the plant.

QS-9000: not firing on all cylinders
Article Abstract:
Automotive suppliers are skeptical about the success of the QS-9000 automotive quality requirement in solving redundant standards. This is true because of the lack of task force consensus on major issues including third-party registration and certification requirement uniformity. The pressure on both tier-one and sub-tier suppliers caused by auditor shortage and imminent deadline dates also puts in doubt the feasibility of QS-9000.
